Layla was sick...pig ear chews??

Post by mjnas » Fri, 25 Oct 2002 03:15:03

Last week I gave Layla (3 months old this Sunday) several dog biscuits. My
wife had also given her several.  The same day, I gave her a pig ear to chew
on. Later that day she developed diarrhea. I kept an eye on her and the next
day she continued to have very bad diarrhea with a little *** in it and
she also vomited twice. I immediately called the vet and took her in.    She
ate normally, drank normally, but had terrible diarrhea AND vomiting.

My vet said that she had a large amount of bacteria in her system that she
could have gotten from the pig ear. She was given a shot to calm her tummy,
and pepto bismal-like puppy medicine and an antibiotic.   She is back to her
normal self but I will not give her any more pig ears for treats!  Maybe
when she is a bit older.

What a great puppy she is!

I have had the same problem with both my dogs (Lab and Akita).
Similar problems with rawhide too.

Sorry to hear about the puppy.  I would not give her pig ears when she got
older.  I thought there was an issue about them here at one time, about
salmonella?  The older she gets the more chance for her to swallow them
whole.

Sorry your pup was sick and glad she's better now.

I don't give Bubba any rawhide or pigs ears.  For treats, I give carrots
mostly.  A big treat is a bell pepper.
Helps with weight also;-)

No more ears or rawhide. Think I'll go with the sensible , healthy treats
and PLENTY of chew toys!

We used to give pig ears to our babies until they developed the runs.

Now no ears, never gave them rawhide.

Treats are carrots, fruits, a piece of toast with a lil butter on it, a piece
of VERY smelly hard cheese, bell peppers, lettece, tomatoes, etc
