About ready to have pups,,i think!

Post by Jeff Thoma » Mon, 13 Aug 2001 22:06:03

Well, my 18month blk lab jumped out a 6ft window 2 months ago during her 2nd
heat.  I was waiting until her 3 heat and had a stud picked out but she had
other plans.  This is going to be my first litter with any dog.  She will be
60 days into gestation tommorrow.  I have been told that final gestation to
birth is 90 days.  Is that accurate?  Also, any tips for the birth or puppy
care would be very helpfull!
Thanks!
Jeff

90 days?  Boy, will you be in for a surprise VERY soon!

Better rethink this and do some quick getting ready. It's 9 weeks or 63
days and I've found that it's usually a day, maybe two at most, and no more,
either way. Seems to me you'd better have someone on stand-by that may know
a little more than you do.

Personally, I can't stand to watch it (weak stomach) and would be more in
the way than a help but my wife ALWAYS has someone on call to help should it
be necessary. So far so good but it's an extra precaution.

Do you have a welping box ready? pig rails? A nice warm and comfortable
place for the birth and after?

Sounds like you'd better spend the rest of the day getting ready.

         Good luck !!!

Oh my, you are in for fun. Make sure your vet is oncall, make sure you have
read a book on whelping and start looking for responsible homes NOW.
Puppies are a lot of fun but like having a baby, it can be dangerous(just as
for humans). If you want some book recommendations or website addies(maybe
Laura will send you her nice site on one of her girls having puppies..has
pictures and everything). Make sure she whelps in quiet too...no three ring
circus(ie. every neighbour for miles).
Keep us posted Jeff.
Cheers
