Tip of tail bleeding

Post by rdla » Wed, 02 Feb 2005 00:53:21

My dog (1 1/2 year old pitbull) has something wrong with the tip of his
tail. I have an appointment next saturday to get some shots and have it
looked at but until then ...
He has itched the very tip of his tail down to the skin. About a 3/4
inch area is hairless and sometimes bleeding. He is a very happy dog
and therefore wags his tail quite a bit. When he gets wagging it hits
things and I think causes it to start bleeding again. I had bandaged it
to avoid *** splatter but have since heard that I should not do so.
So now I got some chlorhexidine cleansing stuff and have some
antibacterial cream that I've put on his tail. I think because he wags
so much it may take a while for healing. Any advise?? Am I treating it
correctly??
Thanks for any advise anyone can offer.

I knew one guy with a pitbull that had the tail docked because the dog
wagged it so hard and kept breaking it and causing it to bleed and bruise.
I don't see anything wrong with bandaging it until you get to your
vet. Can you call the vet's office and ask what to do until you can get
there? That's what I usually did with my dog, and you'd get more reliable
advice than what you could find on Usenet. Be sure to have the vet check
for fleas and skin disease/allergy. My pitbull had allergies and she'd
*** her fur off sometimes.

"Cutheal" works best found (sold) in feed and tack stores...Maybe a change
in diet would be in order.....
you can thank me later....

Tip of tail bleeding

We went to the vet.  She said that what I was doing to treat it was
fine and to stop with the cream in a few days and to keep it wrapped
for a few days.  Much easier said than done!  I have unsuccessfully
tried to wrap it.  He has the wrap off quicker than it took me to get
it on.
I have determined that the cause is just him wagging his tale while in
his cage.  I may have to find some sort of material that I can line the
inside of his cage with that he won't eat!
If I can't get it wrapped up I will go by the vet and have her do it.
I'm hoping that he can keep his tail!

You might try giving him a stuffed kong when you put him in his crate. He
can work on that instead of the lining.
