Keith, I have had my dog (Golden Retriever)to the vet several times for
what I thought was ear mites.  After several expensive visits the vet
found that it was not ear mites but a yeast infection.  Both irritations
will display the same symptoms, black substance in ear that has a foul
oder, itches the dog.  The dog was put on medication for the infection
and has not had a problem since.  I clean his ears regularly with
mineral oil.  Good Luck

Dear Keith,  I have cured ear mites with an old remedy used by grandma (it
also treats ringworm).  You mix 2/3's mineral oil with 1/3 Iodine (the kind
for cuts).  Mix well and clean the ears with this twice a day.  The mineral
oil suffocates the mites (and yeast) and the iodine poisons them.  After 3
days do it once a day for about 3 days, then every other day etc. depending
on the response.  If the ears are very inflamed and smell really bad the
dog may need to see a vet for antibiotics.  however my dogs ears never
reached that stage.  Good luck to you!     Doglady = Carol

I've always used a mixture of vinegar and glycerin, and then dried
the ear with some weaker rubbing ***.  Seems to work on
the yeast infections, and I think I'll try it on mites too.
Have 2 goldens.

I was very interested to read your post.  What mineral oil do you use.
