Food Allergies

Six months ago our 1.5 yr old Border Collie had a bout of flatulence,
diarhea and vomiting.  Several stool tests were negative. He had 2
courses of Flagil, plus 3 worm/parasite medicines.   We tried 3
different foods, as well as home-cooked hamburger, rice and carrot.  He
still had 'soft icecream' stools and  discomfort. Finally we tried
Eukanuba food and he improved.  The vet thinks  a parasite/virus caused
the initial symptoms and left him with food allergies.  Allergy tests
show he's allergic to beef, pork, egg, brewer's yeast, wheat, corn,
soybean and cheese; the results for milk and lamb were border-line.

Sorry to be long-winded, but I'm concerned and I'd really appreciate any
answers or suggestions. 1) I  read recently that salmonella poisoning
has been linked to pigs ears, and he had eaten several in the 2 weeks
before the initial illness. What are the symptoms of salmonella in
dogs?  2) Has anyone else had experience with food allergies developing
after an illness? 3) The food he's on now contains beef, egg and corn -
all things he's allergic to -  and he still is occasionally flatulent
and uncomfy. If he keeps eating it are his symptoms likely to get worse
or better?  4) The vet has suggested an elimination diet. I'm happy to
cook for Piper, but am concerned about nutrition since things took so
long to stabilize.  Are there supplements one can use with an
elimination diet? 5) Does anyone have any suggestions for alternative
treatments to 'cure' the allergies?

Pamela, have you looked at California Natural food?  It's a more natural
kibble designed for the allergic doggie, since it has so few
ingredients: lamb, ground brown rice, and sunflower oil (plus
vits/mins).  A lot of folks try this food as their elimination diet.

I'm not affiliated w/ them, btw.

Hi! have you looked into Iams new prescription diet Fish and Potato? It is
unreal for allergies.  Cod liver oil given in small doses is used as an
anti-inflammatory for allergies and arthritis. There are 2 books I am
reading right now. They are "The Ultimate Diet, Natural Nutrition for Dogs
and Cats" by Kymythy R. Schultze and "Give Your Dog A Bone"by Dr. Ian
Billinghurst.  They are all about feeding dogs and why they have these
horrible food allergies. I sympathize with you. I have a German Shepherd
that I got from the breeder at 9 weeks with severe food allergies. She was
on Iams puppy food. She threw up all the time. Sometimes her food was
undigested sometimes just bile. It took 6 months and a fortune to find out
what her problem was. If your border is having problems digesting, go to a
easy food like chicken and rice or do the fish and potato. I have seen it
work wonders! You might want to think about giving yogurt 3 times a week as
a treat. It will help with digestion. Good luck!  Arlene
