OT: Xnews questions + x-face question

Post by Cate » Wed, 31 Dec 2003 07:01:02

I've received a sign: my copy of OE is b0rken ever since DH installed the
software for his new iPaq, so now seems like a good time to switch
newsreaders. I'm slowly breaking the MS ball-and-chain.

I've RTFM already, but I still can't figure out how to:

View posts that are in reply to mine.
Have the ng refresh with only unread posts.

Would any kind Xnews user care to help me out on those two things?

Also, I made an x-face image of Orson in Photoshop, but the x-face maker
script at http://www.mythic-beasts.com/tools-toys/xface/ says I'm trying to
use a pjpeg rather than a jpeg image, even though I've saved it as a jpeg
format. (There is no option for pjpeg that I can see.) I've never even
heard of pjpeg.

What's up with that, x-face users? Anyone know?

This should happen automagically.  Do you have an ID token?
  Special->Setup Xnews->Identities tab.
Responses to your posts should be scored to +9999.

Special->Setup Xnews->Storage->Save nothing
Make sure that the above isn't overriden in individual NGs
(in the articles window, click the storage symbol to the
left of the "T" in the status bar).

I prefer this converter:
  http://www.dairiki.org/xface/xface.php

Use Photoshop to convert your image to 44x44 bits b&w before
you sent it to an X-Face converter.  Past the result into
Xnew's custom headers tab (compose tab) with no linefeeds and
put an asterix in front.  Here's mine:
  *X-Face: %,FY$Y]VQ+&>A!AZ?>hFTM?Lv.<|9>%KyF/%aT(k#U3\v]81fmV^Xid5U-sK`G5J*~$iBvcSLnP

Aha! on all counts. It works. Many thanks!

Thanks, too, for the tip on the ID token (which I didn't have, although
replies were already scored to 9999). One thing I particularly liked about
OE was that I could refresh with only unread headers, but I could also view
entire threads, with read and unread posts. Do you know if that's possible
in Xnews? I still can't find reference to it in the manual.

Next, I'll be looking up how to consistently have text I'm replying to show
up in my reply. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't.

Thanks again,
Cate

Turn header storage on:
  Special->Setup Xnews->Storage->Save Headers

That's how I do it - it takes a little longer to load the group,
but it allows you to put the thread into context.  If you want
to refresh while you're in the group, hit F5.

Because Xnews automatically marks articles read that you've
first read in another group, in heavily crossposted groups (like
breeds and behavior) you might want to "load read articles":
  Special->Setup Xnews->Misc->Load read articles
This really slows things down, so I don't do it.  If I want to
see context in such a situation, I can either retrieve the
parent article or reconstruct the entire thread when needed.

The manual's not very good, but you can also degagoogle on
news.software.readers for most stuff.  Also, for more hints, hit
<Alt>K to see your key bindings.

Highlight the text to which you'd like to reply, then reply ('F'
for followup).

Nice X-Face!

Thanks for this, and for all the answers.

Thanks! It's a little dark, but that's the problem with a black dog. I'm
gonna tinker a little more.

        pjpeg means progressive-jpg, a variant similar to interlaced gifs,
it uses a multi-pass rendering that trades a bit of extra filesize for
having a recognizable images when only about a third downloaded.
        If you don't know why you want to use one, you shouldn't be.
Check your image software for the jpg saving options, along with the
quality level there should be a switch for progressive mode.

Thanks for the info. I use Photoshop 5.0, and there's been no indication in
my 5 years of using it of having files save in pjpeg when I specify jpeg.

In any case, it's moot now. The x-face converter I originally used was the
one that complained about pjpeg instead of jpeg, but one Matt pointed out
didn't have that complaint about the same file.
