Malamute needs a buddy(?).

I have a five yr. old Alaskan Malamute named Sitka. She is the most
wonderful dog and a dear friend. Because my husband and I have such a
long commute we are away from home, and her, for ~14hrs a day. It
stinks. I have worried about leaving her for so long without a buddy. I
thought that malamutes were pack dogs and she would be happyer with a
buddy. My husband always wanted a Dobie so we got a pup a little under
a yr. old and brought it home for Sitka. She proceeded to beat the ***
out of it at every turn. She has NEVER hurt, or even been agressive to,
another dog. In fact when we are at the beach she seeks other dogs out
to play. (We live on the beach). So the Dobie went to another home. I
just couldn't let the fighting continue. Sitka is very protective of
her rights to my husband and is not into sharing him, that was one of
the problems. Sitka grew up from age 1 to 3 with a female black lab
which she loved so I don't understand this new problem.
Are malamutes generally happier w/ others? Do I have to get another
malamute? Also, now Sitka is fine with other dogs when we go on walks
etc but actively growls at ALL puppies.
Any help or malamute knowledge would be greatly appreciated. I feel
terribly guilty leaving her every day but I can't have a war zone in my
home.
THANX tons in advance!
