Do puppies get the flu?

Post by Kathy L. Baglio » Wed, 22 Jan 1997 04:00:00

Yesterday, for seemingly no apparent reason, my 10 month-old toy poodle
vomited once...sort of yellowish, slightly foamy. He was quiet and sleepy
for the rest of the day. By last night, he was obviously hungry and ate a
small bowl of his regular dry food, moistened with a little warm milk...a
treat he loves. By this morning, he was back to himself. I had scheduled a
long-overdue grooming appointment for him and kept it. The groomer told me
that she is hearing the same thing from other dog owners and she believes
that they are getting viruses from us. Is this possible? I must admit, I
haven't felt well the last several days, as if I am fighting the dreaded
influenza virus. What are the facts?

Kathy and Rascal, who looks and feels wonderful with his new haircut!

Dogs cannot catch viruses from people and people cannot catch viruses
from dogs.   If your dog vomited once and was back to normal so quickly
then there is nothing wrong with it.   All dogs vomit occasionally.   If
he starts doing it on a regular basis or even a few times take him to the
vet.   I have a nearly 11 year old shih tzu who used to vomit a lot when
young even though there was nothing wrong with her.   My vet couldn't
find anything wrong with her and she was obviously healthy.   He said
just occasionally some dogs are sick like this.   She has got a lot
better now she is older but is still sick occasionally.   If they are
sick and ill you will soon know.

Then how do you explain rabies?

Sorry - I was thinking of airborne viruses and did not give any thought
at all to something like rabies, which of course I have never come
across.  My husband says I should not jump in without thinking!  I always
thought only bacteria could be passed on but you are right, of course.
We do not have rabies in this country and I was thinking of the flu-ey
types of illness, but living in a rabies free country I don't even think
of it when considering illnesses.

I was definitely wrong, though, and I suppose there may be others.  For
example, you can get TB from animals now I stop to think about it, and
Weil's disease (although I don't know if that is viral or bacterial).

It is just I keep reading posts asking if people can catch colds from
their pets or vice versa and also saying animals get colds, which
strictly they don't.

Anyway, I am glad that I am able to be complacent about rabies!

Thanks for forcing me to think - something I tend to avoid.
