What exactly is Schutzhund?

Post by Wendy Hua » Wed, 06 Nov 1996 04:00:00

Hello, I've been in the hunt for a Doberman, and I've come across dogs
with Schutzhund titles, and I would like to find out what exactly it
is and the difference between levels I, II, and III.  Any information
would be much appreciated, and if at all possible, an email reply
would be even better :)

I don't know exactly what that is, but the word "schutzhund" is german, and
literally means "dog for (personal) protection or defense". "Schutzen" means
"to protect", and "hund" means "dog". Since you're talking about a doberman,
maybe is the way to qualify the abilities or usage of this particular breed. I
don't know the difference between I, II and III. Sorry.

Schutzhund is a competitive sport that combines obedience, tracking and
protection.  There is a good description of the requirements for each
level in the Working Dog FAQ in the rec.pets.dogs.info newsgroup.  While
you're there, you should also read the Doberman FAQ.

There's also a discussion of it in the GSD FAQ.  (Schutzhund isn't
limited to any one breed for the most part.)
