I have been feeding my dog the same dog food for the last 6 months. He
is 9 months old now. As of 4 days ago, he started having very bad case
of diarrhea. The stool is dark brown, watery (a puddle of mess), full
of chunks of food, and it smells bad. He also vomits. This is when I
opened up a new batch of that same dog food. I figure that maybe it's
a bad batch. I waited 24 hours, only feeding him water. I opened up a
new batch of that same brand of dog food. He was all right the next 24
hours. His stool was getting hard but the latter of the stool was
soft. And then the diarrhea and vomiting started again. I waited 24
hours and then brought him to the vet. The vet was puzzled. My pup
shows no sign of weaknesses, and still full of energy despite lack of
eating. The vet suggested that it might me food allergy. He added
that some dogs could tolerate the same dog food for a long time and
then have an allergy to it all of a sudden. We came home with 2 cans
of Hill Science Diet's prescription diet (canned dogfood). I fed that
to him last night. He seems ok this morning as I didn't find any
mess. I fed half the can of the mentioned food to him at 6am this
morning. As of 1pm this afternoon, the vomitting started again. I
found chunks of food from what he ate this morning. The food should've
been digested in that 8 hour period so I concluded that he must have
problems digesting solid food (duh).
I can't afford to bring him to the vet yet again. Our session
yesterday only took 10 minutes. The vet told me that I should give him
some time to adjust to his food. Feed him little by little. In other
words, give it some time. If we still have this problem by next Friday
then I'm going to have to take him in again. In the meantime, here is
my plan:
Put him on a liquid diet. Chicken broth mixed in with raw eggs. This
should have enough fat, protein, and flavor. I might add a little bit
of "ground to paste" white rice if he could tolerate it. He can't eat
like this forever but for now, he has to have something.
I need advice from some of you who had similar experience. Is this
typical of food allergy? I don't want him to go on a BARF diet, he
couldn't digest anything as of now. I would also prefer not to name
the brand of dog food mentioned. It's a good brand and have a strong
following in this newsgroup. I don't want to tarnish their reputation.
