Cancer (Mast cell cancer in Wiemeraners)

Post by Robert Hazelri » Mon, 24 Aug 1998 04:00:00

We have a three year old Weim that has been diagnosed with Mast cell cancer.
Initially, he had to go for treatments every week, but in the past few
months this has been needed only every six weeks.  Last week, we discovered
another bump that will need to removed ( after a year and half of no flare
ups)  Our vet, does not seem to be very concerned, but recommends that we
have this lump removed.  This means another surgery.  Until the surgery,
later this week, we won't know if we need to change the current therapy he
is getting.

We are frustrated since there seems to be little information out there
regarding mast cell cancer.  Our dog is doing great, but we feel we are
making decisions on very limited knowledge.

Does anyone know where to find out more?

Dear Robert,

My condolances on your discovery of Mast cell cancer.
My 8 year old Bullmastiff has Mast cell cancer also...not operable because of
his Bacterial Endocarditis and his heart being so bad.

In any event...make sure you read a lot of things regarding thios type of
cancer...the websites the other posters sent you are really great!  talk to
your vet...and above all...keep a positive attitude!  With correct treatment
you have a very good chance at a good prognosis.

Good Luck and keep us posted!

A happy story (so far at least), for my 5 year old Flat-coat.  Mast cell tumor
was found in March and removed (two surgeries to get adequate margins).  No
recurrence so far, but I probe her pretty regularly.

For those who may read this thread and think that their dogs aren't at risk, or
that the signs will be obvious, they're not!

Lindy's tumor was pea-sized, and under her dense coat, it was a miracle I
happened to rest my hand on it one day.  I thought it too small to be anything,
and even thought it had disappeared at one point.  CHECK OUT ALL TUMORS - you
never know which ones may be malignant!
