Dog licking face and disease in humans?

Post by bkyv.. » Tue, 01 Oct 1996 04:00:00

Hi!  My mom and I are having a disagreement.  Quite often my dog
will*** my face and mouth to show affection and my mom just hates
it because she says we can catch diseases from animals.  Is this
true?  Can a person catch a cold from a dog if it happens to have
one?  Thanks.  Chris

While you can catch some diseases from animals, they're mostly
through bites (like rabies, for example). You can't catch a cold
from a dog because most viruses and many bacteria have a limited
host range, meaning that they only infect closely related species.
You're a LOT more likely to catch something just from being around
another person than you are from letting a dog*** you. As long
as your dog is up to date on his or her shots, you have little to
nothing to worry about.

I disagree, our whole household had to be treated for strep including all
the dogs.  We humans got medicine and got over it then got it again, it
took all living animals in the family getting treatment to go away.  My
Vet said that it is quite common for dogs to catch the common cold from
people, strep and staph I know from personal experience can be
transmitted between humans and their dogs.
