Is there a quiet dog?

Post by Bill » Thu, 20 Jul 2000 04:00:00

Have a home-based business.  Wife and kids really want a dog.
Would be bad if dog barked a lot because I talk to clients on the
phone.  What dogs are quiet?  They want a dalmation.  Are they
quiet?

Neighbor's have a semi-aggressive female pit bull mutt.  Would a
female or male puppy "mesh" better with it? or is there no
difference?

Thanks!

A dalmation was originally bred to run and bark.  I think that would be a bad
choice for what you are wanting although there are some good bark collars on
the market if you don't mind using electricity to keep your dog quiet.  There
is a breed of small dog that cannot bark.  I am not sure what it is but maybe
someone can help you.

Good grief!
They don't bark, but they YODEL. Loud and fairly often and fairly annoying --
if you're the sort of person who can't stand noise. Also, not NOT a good first
dog!

Basenjis are not a great choice for someone who isn't willing to put a lot
of time and energy into training.  Everyone I know who has had one would
never have another.  Course that's only myself, my sister and a cousin.  I'm
sure there are ppl out there who love them.  They are beautiful, clean
little dogs.

The don't bark but they chortle.  They act more like cats than dogs -
climbing on furniture, tables, counter tops.  And they have a very high prey
drive.  Very.

I don't know if it's a trait with all of them but my female was aggressive
with other dogs, would try her best to kill any cat she saw, and was the
most stubborn, single-minded animal I've ever owned.  (She was spayed, too,
btw).
