Anyone know exactly what LEISHMANIOSIS is?

Post by Joy Blyt » Sat, 08 Mar 1997 04:00:00

Hi All,

My dog's been diagnosed as having Leishmaniosis, but the vet's given me
a really vague desription of what is is.  Can anyone enlighten me?

Thanks,

Joy.

Leishmaniasis is a disease caused by a parasitic flagellated protozoan
which is transmitted by the bite of tropical flies, esp. sandflies. It
can be dermal (causing skin lesions) or internal, in which case it is
especially dangerous, causing deterioration of internal organs. The
major treatment is with an antimony-containing drug, which itself is
fairly ***.

I go to Amazonian Peru every so often and it is endemic there; I worry
far more about this disease than I do about malaria. In South America,
the less dangerous dermal form is present, in Africa it is the internal
form. I don't know if they are different species of protozoan.

Wherever did your dog contract leishmaniasis?

Joy is from Spain. Leishmaniasis is also endemic in the
Mediterranean.

Joy,

Leishmania is a parasite carried by insects (commonly
reduvid bugs depending on your location.)  The dog eats the
reduvid (also known as mexican kissing bugs) and becomes
infected.  Leishmania damages the muscles... most
dangerously the heart muscle- causing cardiomyopathy (which
leads to heart failure.)  The leishmania also damage other
muscles in the body causing pain, weakness, etc.

People become infected by eating the reduvids also.  In
Mexico, it is believed that the bug is an aphrodesiac (sp?)
and people become infected with leishmania instead of
gettting whatever thrill they are looking for.
