Looking for Homemade Diet for a Dog with Liver Disease

Post by frank149 » Wed, 23 Apr 2003 13:51:11

I have an 11-yr old Shih Tzu who has had an extrahepatic
shunt from birth. He has high bile acid values indicating
liver damage. He generally feels quite well, but his appetite
is spotty. He shows only mild interest in canned diets.
Could someone suggest a homemade diet from a
reliable veterinary source that would be suitable for this
dog? He needs  something highly palatable that will not
overload his liver with protein, but will at the same time
give him adequate protein for muscle growth, etc.
     Thank you for your help!

........Have you asked your vet?  I know many do not have home prepared diet
recipes for their clients, but it's worth a try.  What's the protein
percentage of the diet you are currently feeding?

......Donald STrombeck's pet diet book apparently has a chapter on diets for
hepatic disease.  I've never looked at this book so I don't know what the
recipes are like, but it might be worth a try getting a used copy from
somewhere like the zshop at amazon.com

.....These articles mention a few things about the parameters of a liver
diet::

.......I know zip about this diet but you might look at it and run it by
someone:

.......I didn't have time to check all of the results in this Google
search - you might find some other things that help you:
http://www.google.com/search?q=%22liver%2Bdiet%22+dog&hl=en&lr=&ie=UT...
UTF-8&start=10&sa=N

......Other than that you can try to dress up your dog's food with a
sprinkle of something like Parmesan cheese or a little warm defatted chicken
broth and see if he is more interested.

When my dog had pancreatitis, my vet gave me a book out of a Hill's
publication that had several diets on there for differing conditions - low
fat, highly digestible, low protein, etc.  I cooked for her for about three
weeks, gradually working back into her regular food.  I'll still break it
out and cook for one of them if they have an upset tummy.  Ask  your vet for
some similar recipes.

Here are a couple of suggestions:

(!) I feed the Doggie Oats to my dog. I do not cook the chicken, so I make
the recipe, divide it into daily quantities, and freeze. I use some
containers(glad) which I bought for this purpose, and I wash them to use
again. I start defrosting (one container)the day before he is to eat it.It
is not too hard after you have assembled the ingredients you will need for
the healthy powder, etc.

I have not tried this recipe but I have been making their partners cat food
(feline futures)for two years and my cat seems to be doing great.
It is easier to make(the cat food) than the recipe I gave you for dog food
in #1.

I definitely believe in the RAW FOOD Concept.

PS My animals LOVE their food and chow down like there is no tom orrow.
