Passing diseases between humans and dogs.

Hello,

I have a general question.

Are there any diseases that can be passed from humans to dogs and vice
versa?

The only ones I know of are scabies. And of course intestinal parasites. You
could of course check with your vet. And if there are any vets on line could
we have your opinions please?

In the case of bad flea infestations, everyone ends up bitten- dogs, other
pets, and owners alike. I guess that if there were another plague epidemic
that was passed by fleas, that humans could get that from pets.

  Rabies
Leptospirosis (a bacterial disease that can cause death or permanent kidney
damage), Giardiaosis (an intesitnal parasite)
Plus a host of parasitic worms and flukes

That's all I can think of off the top of my head.  Lepto is the biggie,
especially in third-world countries where vaccination is rare and sanitation
poor.

Hi,

I was once told by a Pediatrician that we shouldn't let our dogs*** or
kiss our son's face because dogs, from***ing the ground (something to
do with mold spores) carry the strep germ in their mouths.  FWIW

I know that this isn't what you had in mind, but I think that in our
house my husband and I pass colds back and forth by way of our dog.
Neither of us can resist kissing and hugging him frequently, probably
even more so when we don't feel well as he makes us feel better.  I
think one of us deposits germs on Murphy's fur and the other picks it
up, because when one of us is sick we go to great lengths to try not to
give it to the other, and yet we always seems to pass on the germs.

Many diseases cross species from dogs to humans.  Besides those listed by
previous posters there is Brucellosis, amoebic dysentary(though humans are
more likely to spread this disease to dogs and each other rather than dogs
giving it to humans),  salmonelliosis, campylobacter, ringworm, and the list
goes on and on.  Try searching the internet for zoonotic diseases(diseases
that naturally spread from vertebrate animal to man).  I found an inclusive,
informative web site on zoonotic diseases once, but now I can't find the
darn thing.
