Uuuuuhhhh, before you rush off to get a Basenji, make sure you know what
you're getting into.  They are a wonderful dog, I admit.  Even tho I have
9 dogs, if one came down the pike, I'd have to find room for it.  HOWEVER,
please talk to some Basenji owners and read up on them before getting one.
They are really something else.  If it is going to be left alone, I
suggest not getting one.  They hate being alone, and will make you pay for
that.  Any Basenji owners out there willing to share their stories?

Basenji's are a very particular breed. they will tell you if THEY think
YOU will be a good "pet" to have around.  On 12/30/97, unexpectently
has to put down my 15 year old red/white male and I miss him greatly.
He had a fantastic personality (he owned me from the time he was three)
and had free run of the house and the only time he wanted to chastize
for leaving him was upon return from vacation and he had to go to the
puppy motel (alias Boarding Kennel).  Also, he was a confirmed Choco-
holic and we had to make sure that all chocolate products were out of
reach for him.  When we first got him he was kenneled (they need to
learn that that it is there home and it took a number of years before
I let him have full rein of the kitchen/nook/familyroom area during
the day when I went to work.

However, my daughter's (she is still at home) black/white female is
an entirely different story.  She is kept kenneled when noone is at
home; she would have a field day in those same areas if given free
rein.  When Haji was still alive, he would be free and she'd be
kenneled because she is an instigater and she be the type to say
"I didn't do it, Haji did.. (chuckle, you know how kids can be).
She is more of a grumbler (talks under her breath when reprimanded)
and of a different personality.

Best advice is make sure that your wife's father had visited and spent
time with a variety of Basenjis.  A repribitible breeder will suggest
the same; make several visits to the breeder to visit different litters.
Also, make sure you tell the breeder what type personality you are
looking for and they can assist you in your search for the right
match between her Dad and the dog.

Good luck in your search and if you'd like any more info; can email
