Feeding a dog canned tuna?

Post by bk » Wed, 28 May 1997 04:00:00

I have a friend who insists on feeding his finicky German shepard
tuna - straight out of the can, not mixed with any dog food.  I told him
that I didn't believe it was a good idea, but I couldn't explain why not.

Does anyone have any ideas about canned tuna?

I feed my dachshund canned tuna in water every day, but I mix it with some
fit and trim dog food. Your friend should probably throw a litte dog food
in with it. But tuna is very healthy; high in protein and low in fat. My
dog is in good health and has a very shiny coat.

Is that ALL he's feeding him?  If so, it must be costing him a
FORTUNE.  A German Shepherd can eat a LOT.

Also, it would be a totally inadequate diet, lacking in vitamins,
minerals, fibre, ...

The only treatment for a "finicky" dog, (ie one who has no other
dietary or health problems ), is to put down an appropriate amount of
wholesome dogfood twice a day and leave it for no more than 20
minutes.  If it isn't eaten, remove it.  Of course fresh water should
be available at all times.  No treats, no scraps, no nothin'.

A REALLY spoiled and/or stubborn dog may fast for a couple of days.
Many owners give in before this.  This is how fussy eaters are
created.

Tuna also has a lot of Mercury comtamination in it.  Best to not feed it to
your dog everyday.  Best to do it once or twice a week at most.

But hey,  whatever works...

There have been case of Mercury poisoning in ***s who act Tuna everyday in
their diet.  Albeit several cans a day and how many folks do that much but in
a small dog one can a day can be like several for an ***.
