Curious to know as to whether dogs are susceptible to the same viruses as
people.  Can we transmit cold and flu viruses back and forth?  I know some
diseases like rabies are transmittable to most mammals; just wondering about
more simple disesase.

Colds and flu can't be passed back and forth.

There are a couple of hundred zoonoses that can be passed between humans
and animals.  Some of the more common ones are strep and ringworm.
