Kong Fillers

I have had a kong for my poodle since she was about that age and I put
about a 1/4"-1/2" wide strip of american cheese in it and smeared it all
around so she would have to do a lot of***ing to get at it.  Now at 11
months...I still give it to her before going to work in the a.m.  She is
only left alone for 1/2 day or 2-4 hours.  I didn't want to overdo on the
calories so I really rub it around so she has to work for it.  When I get
home I pick it up...to be washed for refilling the next morning.  I
suppose a person could use more, but I don't want to add to much to her
diet.  I didn't have any luck with other treats either.    Doe

I have a small Kong for a 12 week old Pomeranian. I was told to fill
the Kong with treats for the puppy. All the treats I fill it up with,
fall out. Isn't the idea to make the puppy work to get the treats out
and so it's fun for her?

What do you fill your dogs Kong up with?

I've used lots of different things:
1. If you press on the Kong you can make the opening oval shaped.  So you
can fit something inside that is slightly larger than the hole. Shop
around and experiment with various kinds of dog biscuits.  I've also used
mini-rice (or popcorn) cakes, and various crackers. My latest is shrimp
flavored chips. I open the bag and let them get "stale" you know how such
things go from crispy to soft (flexible) but tougher? The chips aren't
low fat, but they are mostly air and even in the large kong I only use
maybe three.

2. Mix equal parts sticky rice (short grain) and long grain rice and cook
it in broth.  When it is cooked and cooled put a tiny bit of soemthing
really tasty (like doggie beef jerky in the kong, then a bit of rice and
press the rice inside - not too hard - you don't want a concrete
congealed mess, just so it won't fall out on its own.  My dogs really
work their tongues on that one, then slam the Kong on the ground to try
to dislodge soem of the rice.

3. Use something to hold the kibble together - some people use peanut
butter, some use squeeze cheese.  I've tried it, but its too much fat for
my dogs, so I only do it when the puppy is by himself. Some people also
use a bit of canned dog food either by itself or to hold kibble
together.  Freezing makes it more effective.

4. Use one of the dog foods that come in a "chub" that looks like salami.
Because it is flexible you can cut a slice (or piece of a slice) and sort
of fold it (just a curve) and thus put in a piece wider than the
hole.  The dog has to nibble to get at it, and mine have to constantly
toss the kong on the floor to get the chunk back to the hole.

Your dog is smaller than mine, so her kong is probably smaller,
too.  I use the medium black kong, it fits 2 medium sized milk
bones perfectly.

I've tried to shake the milk bones out of it - no way.  It's
amazing how dogs persevere.  Bounce and shake, shake and bounce.
All I know is that the kong is empty when I get home.

A little bit of peanut butter or that "cheese in a can" stuff can be
smeared on the inside walls of the kong.  You don't have to actually
stuff the kong with it, just put in enough to keep the dog interested.

You can also stuff in the teats, fill with peanut butter, then put it in the
freezer. It takes the pup longer to*** it out.

I fill the Kong with their regular kibble and block the hole with a larger
dog biscuit. They chew away at the biscuit and usually a larger piece falls
inside, blocking the kibble and allowing only a few at a time to fall out. I
have also started using the Buster Food Cube and other round balls that drop
treats out when rolled. My collies absolutely love them. They are great when

I have a 115 lb Rott and I fill his kong with peanut butter. Or put a
piece of swiss or mozarella cheese in it and microwave for about 20 sec.
It spreads all over the inside, then I put it in the freezer until cold.
Both ways keep him occupied for a long time.  Regards,

Hi!

Just thought I would let you know that they found a very bad bacteria called
"alfatoxin" that is found on Strawberries and Peanut Butter.  Apparently,
the machines that are used for picking the strawberries and peanuts can not
detect when they are "moldy" and that mold is what turns into the very
serious alfatoxin which is very carcenogenic and they can't stop it.

I was feeding our dog the peanut butter in the sterilized bone.  I would
stuff the ends of it where the marrow goes with the peanut butter and he
loves it, but I don't do it anymore since I found out about this.  It is a
very serious carcenogenic and they don't know much about it or what to do to
prevent it getting into the produce markets.

Thought I would pass this on.

You know, if I stopped eating something every time someone told me it
could kill me, I'd be... well, thinner.

For anyone who wants to look further into this, the correct spelling is
"aflatoxin."
