help me choose breed (thanks!!!)

Post by Joeywi » Thu, 19 Dec 1996 04:00:00

I am single male (35) and live by myself in a detached home.  I am very
active and would enjoy running with my dog in spring-fall mornings and
cross country skiing with my dog in winter mornings.  I am prepared to
hire a service to walk my dog in mid-day and I will walk (or run) again at
night.
On weekends in summer my dog will be outside with me all weekend by the
lake or will run with me through the woods while I mountain bike.  In
winter, on weekends I want my dog to join me outside all day on the frozen
lake while I windsurf on the ice and/or skate and ski on the ice.

I'd like my dog to be able to run loose whenever possible where it is
allowed.

I want to enjoy the companionship of a dog during the day.

When I was in my ***s, we owned a french poodle.  This is the extent of
my current experience with dogs.

Thanks again!

You have suggested a lot of activities that really are not compatible with having a dog
about.  A dog can't keep up with you in most of these activities, and will be a positive
danger to both of you when it crosses your path unexpectedly.  Perhaps you might want to
reconsider what you want to do with a dog before you start looking at breeds.
