dry skin/dandruff

Post by SM » Fri, 06 Nov 1998 04:00:00

my dog has very dry, flaky skin and, as a result, sheds
considerably. I use a moisturizing spray to soothe her
skin but it seems to last only a couple of days. My vet
recommended Sebolux shampoo for the dog but that
has not helped much either.
Is there any food supplement (oils etc) that I should
try on my dog (a beagle). Any home remedies???
I groom my dog every other day (well, almost!!).

thanks

SM- I use regular Head and Shoulders on my flaky dog's skin. I have tried
supplements and her current dog food has great Omega 3 percentages AND her
Thyroid condition (which we thought was the problem) is under control... the
head and shoulders lasts about a week for us - although I am too lazy to
re-bathe her until 2 weeks have gone by and she gets a little smelly. She is
12 and my vet seems to think she is just old and that is why her skin is
yucky. We tried the Sebulox (or whatever it is called) too, and Head and
Shoulders works better for us. Good luck!

The best solution I have found for dry and itchy skin and dandruff is
flaxseed oil.  I give my German Shepherd 1 teaspoon mixed in each
meal and his coat has become beautiful again. It really works!

Hi Kappy,

I'll certainly try this on my beagle (5 mo old now). Also, I would not have
to buy a separate shampoo for my pup - we can share my H&S now :-)
Nothing could be better!!

I once had a dog who kept scratching to the point of small sores. On a
hunch, I started poring a small amount of vegetable oil on her dry food.
Fixed her up in no time. Apparently, she wasn't getting enough fat in her
diet.
