2 Qs re: 15-week old lab

Hi all!

We have a couple of questions that we have not seen
addressed in the FAQ. A little over a month ago we got a
yellow lab puppy and he is now 15 weeks old.

Question 1:
One of our neighbors has a lab mix puppy about the same age
as ours. When the two play together they seem to be enjoying
themselves but sometimes our dog barks, growls, and acts
aggressive while he is on top or chasing her.  Although the
neighbor's dog is a little larger than ours they seem to be
equally *** (neither seems to consistently knock down
and be on top of the other).  The neighbor's dog is not get-
ting hurt and she enjoys the play since she comes back for
more and entices our dog to play when we hold our dog back.
Should we be correcting that behavior (and how?) or is it
just natural puppy socialization?  One of the books we've
read ("The Art of Raising a Puppy", by the Monks of some-
where) emphasizes how important play is for young puppies
during their socialization; however, they seem to be talking
about very young puppies still with their littermates.  Our
puppy is a bit older.  Should he still be playing so hard?

Question 2:
Our other neighbor has an older puppy (6 mos) which is kept
in a chain link fenced yard.  That dog and our dog play
through the fence.  The problem is that our dog barks a lot
during play.  Should this barking behavior be corrected or
is it normal puppy communication?

If these questions have been addressed in the FAQ maybe
someone can point out where.

Thanks a lot!

I'm no expert, I'd think letting the 2 pups play would be okay. I think
that as long as both tails are wagging, and their taking turns being
dominate it's just normal puppy play. Do watch them closely though.

I think it would be a good thing to teach them commands like play nice, no
sniff, be gentle etc. Making a pup obey you during it's play time with
other pups is good practice. Basic commands also can be enforced. It's
easier to do it now then it will be when the pup grows up! :)

Good luck with your pup!
