JRT puppy gets car sick

Post by V.. » Thu, 11 May 1995 04:00:00

I have a four month old JRT puppy that'll get car sick and puke within 6 blocks
of driving. I've taken him on 7 trips now with the same result. Is there
something else I can do to make him get used to the car other than keep trying?
Do dogs get sick from the car motion or the sight of objects passing by them ?

Thanks for any info.

My 5 month old dalmation also had a tendency to be carsick and just
generally fussy in the car. For long trips we give her a tablespoon of
children's Gravol (which she loves... I think it's banana flavored) which
is not enough to make her sleepy but enough to make her calm and not
nauseated. For some reason since we started this on long trips she has
also been better on short trips (although she occasionally still gets the
hiccups...which can make her vomit if she doesn't stay calm). I wouldn't
reccomend this for short trips but for longer trips (more than an hour) it
allows calm and leaves puppy happy to get out at every rest stop along the
way.

Start out by not even driving the car, just put the dog in the car and sit
in the driveway.  You might take a book to read!  Then start out with VERY
short trips, a block, 2 blocks, build up slowly.  Good Luck!!  P.S. My
husband's recommendation is to have someone along who can hold the puppy
out the window if it begins to barf, he says he's used this successfully
in the past (before I knew him)  but I wouldn't support this course of
action !!!

Often its nerves, the company of a placid dog who likes the car often helps.
My sovereign remedy is a glucose tablet 1/2 an hour before you leave.  Some
dogs love the tablets, others need it rammed down their throats.  It has
worked with any cases I or my friends have tried.

Good luck,

Judy
