how to stop dog jumping?

I wrote two months ago in a panic about my toy poodle (Killer) having
back surgery.  I should have written back to thank everyone for helping
me through the trauma.  Killer is nearly normal now, but the vet says
that he should NEVER jump down from anything.  I'm not having much
success at stopping him.  We have a ramp to the couch and he is really
good about using it to go up.  He is good about using it to go down
unless he is e***d ( someone at the door, a noise outside, the cat at
the door, etc.).  Any suggestions about how to train him better?  If he
jumps a couple of times a day, you can tell that his hind quarters get
weak by bedtime. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

you could try keeping a light-weight, not too long leash on Killer. I once saw
something on t.v. about using this leash inside to control other behavior
problems. It acts as a reminder to the dog that he is inside of the 'den' but
he is not the ALPHA dog. It acts as a way to use behavior modification to bring
change. A couple of jerks on the leash will teach him to remember to think
before he leaps (hopefully) kind of like being tethered, yet free.
