something happening to my dogs legs

Post by <n.. » Fri, 13 Feb 2004 08:44:29

Hello,

I decided to take my dog to the Vet tonight, in sort of a panic.  They
were closed early and no reason why.  My dog is almost 8 years old, and
has always been very healthy and active.  She is still as active as I
will let her be, in spite of her current condition.

Last summer I noticed her limping.  I could see nothing wrong with her
foot or leg, and in a few days it had passed.  About 4 weeks ago, she
started limping again, and I knew it was painful for her because she had
trouble getting up the steps and jumping onto the bed, and she would
whimper.  This went on for almost three weeks before her leg swelled up
and appeared to be intensely bruised on the inside from crotch to ankle.
In 2 days all the swelling and redness was gone, and a few days after
that, the limping was gone too.

After a day she started limping again, but the swelling has not come
back.  Not in that leg anyway.  When I got home from work tonight, her
other leg is badly swollen and red in the same way as before!  She is
using it in favor of the first leg.  This seems to me to be very unusual
and it sort of has me freaked out.  Is there a vet, or anyone else here
thats ever seen anything like this?  Her other leg, the first leg seems
to be stiff now.  Could this be arthritis or gout?

Thanks

..............What did the vet say about this problem at this point?

Well actually what you said was this:

>>>Last summer I noticed her limping.  I could see nothing wrong with her

foot or leg, and in a few days it had passed.  About 4 weeks ago, she
started limping again, and I knew it was painful for her because she had

back.  Not in that leg anyway.  When I got home from work tonight, her

.....The vet may have been closed when the second leg swelled up, but what
did he say when the first was swelled up after 3 weeks of pain?  Did you not
go the vet?  Call them now and make an appointment, see if they'll squeeze
you in.  We can't diagnose this problem on the internet.  Your dog needs
help.

My vet will see all animals 24 hours a day.
Out of hours cost more but they can be seen.
Not sure what your dog is.
There are two things that spring to mind.
One is .....is your dog over weight.?
The other thing is jumping down is a killer to dogs legs especially the
knee joints.

The only vet in my town is at some conference till next week, the
emergency contact is also at the same conference.  I came home early
today and called one in the nearest city at about 4pm.  I talked to a
receptionist who said they probably couldn't see her today.  She had a
vet call me, and it took me about 15 minutes of listening to her before
I could finish the story.  She seemed a little concerned when I told her
that her legs seemed full of ***, [my assumption, as they are/were so
red, but said if I could get in next week it should be ok.  Xrays, then
go from there. I know there is an emergency clinic in city, but after
talking with this woman, decided to wait.

My dog is eating ok, still wants to play ball and I think that told the
vet something.

Thanks

Hi, I am sorry to hear about your dog.  My dog has also been having problems
with his legs and such.  He is almost 10 years old and we think he is just
having problems with arthritis. (some info:
http://www.arthritis-in-dogs.com/html/faq.html)  I went to the vet and she
wants to take x-rays to see why and where the pain is.  I know it is
expensive, but it would be for the best to take your dog ASAP.  Until then
here is a helpful website that may help you figure what actually is ailing
your beloved pet.
http://www.lowchensaustralia.com/Health.htm
If it looks like your dog is in pain you can give him buffered aspirin, read
about it here http://www.vetinfo.com/daspirin.html and call your vet and
asked them how much to give your dog until you can get in.

Good Luck & God Bless

........Aspririn would not be a good idea if the dog has some sort of anemia
or bleeding disorder.
