Guinea pig and dogs

I just got a new pet - a five week old abyssinian guinea pig.  He's still a
little shy, but coming out of his shell a bit.  I've only had him since Sunday.
The dogs and cats are understandably fascinated, and I'm wondering if anyone
here has had cavies and canines together successfully?  He will be kept in a
cage most of the time, but I've already let him out a couple times to explore
my pet-proof areas.
  The rundown is:
Bunny - 4yo collie.  She is a little worrisome, likes to stare at the little
guy, when I let her sniff him she poked him and***ed his ears.
Bonnie - 2yo collie (the blind one).  She thinks he's a great new toy, tried to
get him to play by pawing at the ground and yipping, which is her standard
come-on for any species (cat, dog, rabbit, turtle).  She's been around small
animals a lot - my parents have a free-roaming house rabbit and a guinea pig -
the bunny likes to be chased and will sneak up on Bonnie and yank her tail if
he feels he's being ignored.
Juliet - alley cat #1.  Not impressed.  She shrugged and walked away.
Rosalyn - alley cat #2.  She was fascinated.  She patted the pig on his bottom
(no claws) and followed him around when I let him explore the room.
Virgil - persian cat.  He's mellow and watched, but didn't try to sniff or
chase the pig.
Annie - foster collie.  She stares and I'd worry about her - but she's going
home tomorrow   : D
Nicky - foster dog (also blind).  He "stares" at the cage, wagging his tail,
and has twice tried to pounce on the pig, only to smack into the cage.  It's
now up out of his reach.
Overall, the guinea pig is very outgoing - he is a talker, and seems to
realize that he has an audience.  Once in a while he'll go crackerjack and run
around the cage full speed, making guinea pig noises, which brings all the dogs
running to stare at him - very cute!

Similar experience anyway - We rescued a flying squirrel baby.  And at the
time we had two beagles - living in the house, of course.  And a cat.

The beagles we just repeatedly told "No" and they eventually ignored the
squirrel's existence.  I'm not sure we ever would have reached the point
where I would have left them alone all loose in the house and gone out
shopping.  But the dogs would be in our laps while the squirrel was running
around - doing curtains, crawling in and out of our shirts, all that.  And
these were dogs who would kill out in the field with no hesitation.

The cat had to be put outside.

I know of several instances where people had dogs - beagles even - and pet
rabbits and they all learned to co-exist.  Play together even.  I think what
happens is that the dogs learn to not think of the rabbit as a rabbit.  They
think it's another dog or a cat or something.

Good luck.
