New Puppy Owner needs help!

Post by Narinder Kanw » Tue, 30 Jul 1996 04:00:00

I just got a West Highland White Terrier puppy, now aged 8 weeks.  I heard
that it is possible to train small dogs to use a cat litter box.   Is this
true?  How effective would this be towards this breed?  Has anyone tried this
before with another breed or the same?  Any insight would be greatly
appreciated.

Alot of dogs can make and become good trackers if given the chance. I feel
one of the best noses(not to mention keenest sense of hearing and
sight)are Chinese Shar-Pei. Some dogs of course are better than others as
in Sporting and Scent Hounds as they were bred with that purpose inmind.
We tend to over rate the more popular dogs as that's what we see the most
of, and I feel to a certain extent is wrong as the rarer and lesser breeds
people are not familiar with so basically they don't have a say as just
what they can do. You get out of a dog what you put into it, and they all
should be commended as all dogs are wonderful.
PE
Also just because there are more of certain breeds and people tend to
exhibit them the most at performance events does not necessarily make them
the best, it's just that the less popular breeds are fewer far between and
haven't been given their fair share and credit where it is due.Let's hear
is for the underdogs.

Several years ago,my son had a dalmation puppy that I trained to
use a litter box, because we were in and out at odd hours. She trained
easier than taking her outside. Just put her in whenever she acted like
she wanted to "go". Picked it up like a snap. He box was right next to
the cat's litter box and they each respected the other's "domain". :>
Of course after she got bigger, and able to control herself better, she
started going outside. But with a dog that will remain small, you could
use the litter box indefintely.
                               Good Luck!
