Update re: blind dog/surgery

Post by XSpot » Sat, 20 Jan 2001 14:10:19

Thanks to all for your concern and assistance regarding our recently-gone-blind
Samoyed, Nikki.  The following is an update per your many requests:

Nikki had surgery to remove both eyes on Wednesday, December 27.  The surgery
was successful - no complications at all - and she came home the next day.  She
was required to wear an Elizabethan collar for the first week to prevent her
from scratching her eyes.  We removed it promptly after one week with the
doctor's permission as it was preventing her from being comfortable (it's hard
to sniff the floor for direction or drink out of a bowl or bucket when you have
a huge collar on and can't see!).

The external stitches were removed this past Monday.  The dog has healed
wonderfully, and, according to the specialist who did her surgery, is
completely pain-free.  (She had been on medication to control/alleviate
pressure on her eyes as a result of degeneration and glaucoma; it wasn't
working.)   Her personality has returned to much the same as before this fiasco
began, and she is finding her way around the house remarkably.  If you did not
see her face, you would not know she is blind!

Special thanks to blinddogs.com and its many members for your support, guidance
and assistance.  What a wonderful resource for people and pets in need. (I
don't think I could have kept my sanity without you!)  Thanks to everyone else
who e-mailed over the last few months; your advice, concern and prayers are
greatly appreciated.

So glad to hear that the surgery is successful in all ways (no
complications, and it's taken care of the pain as it was supposed to).
You GO Nikki!  -And you too, for taking such good care of her and sweating
out these choices for her.
