Can Dogs Carry Lice?

Post by Traveling_frien » Wed, 18 Oct 2000 04:00:00

Hello everyone,

The other day, we discovered that our daughter had lice.  I think
she got it from school since about half her class seemed to have the
problem.  Anyway, we have a dog and a cat.  Our daughter is very close
with both animals and I was wondering if we should be concerned about
needing to treat our pets for lice.  I would appreciate any thoughts
or advice on this situation.  I certainly don't want the pets to
suffer with this problem, but I also don't want to treat our daughter
for lice only to have her pick it up again from the dog or cat.  And,
if necessary, I want to make sure that I don't use anything to treat
the animals that would harm them.

Thanks very much for the help.

my vet said that pets cant get lice

If your daughter gets it again, it may because all the nits werent taken out,
PLEASE get all the nits out to prevent further reinfestation!!!  The chemicals
only kill the live bugs, not the eggs!!

Hope this helps!!

Humans don't get dog lice and vice versa.
You're ok.

Well, your vet probably meant that pets can't get lice from people. Animals
certainly do get lice, and I've bathed enough lice-infested puppies to know for
certain. I keep reassuring myself that the dog lice don't transfer to humans.
Right.

Wow!!

does pet lice leave nits like human lice that need to be combed out?

Animals DO NOT get human lice.  Lice is species-specific.  There are forms
of dog and cat lice, bt its different  than human lice.

Yes indeedy. In truly extreme cases (lots of sucking/attached lice & anemic
puppies), we've used ivermectin injections with good success. But they look
about the same as what you'd expect for lice of any sort ... flat ugly ***s &
lots of tiny white specs that hang on tenaciously.

my vet says no. actually human lice are much harder to get rid of. i
believe that you even have to do the stuffed animals etc.  and get all
those eggs etc.  ----now i only had lice once and they were on a pup i
got ---the vet told me that the lice die fast and that  they are really
much easier to get rid of then the human kind. this was 10 years ago.  i
just powdered my kennel with rotenene powder only once and never had a
problem. now i  had asked if i needed to wash everything in the house
etc and the  vet said no. it was only in human lice that you had that
problem. now  i had 25 huskies at the time.  i powdered them all only
once and it was  gone.  so i hope that you can get rid of the human ones
as it does require a lot more care and time  to get rid of. best of
luck.--------my girlfriends kids had them and it took her quite a few
shampooings and washings to get  rid of them. i have never  seen them
myself as i would not go near her house. ---------hate the little
things.  yek. --------i think often it can be from other kids not
washing their hair. they get those hair styles  where they dont wash
there hair for a week with all the beads and all and then  it can spread
that way.  anyone can pick up the eggs even the cleanest of  people.
------i am no expert on the  human kind and dont know if they originate
from anywhere else  other then lack of someones personal hygiene that
got it all started? they do multiply fast in a school---and everyone is
at risk here.  best of luck ------
