We have the following dogs available at the Oakland Animal Shelter.
Volunteers and foster homes are always welcome.  More information about
the shelter follows at the end of this post.

I've changed the format here a little bit, highlighting dogs that need
special homes, dogs available now, puppies (lots of puppies), small dogs,
etc.

SPECIAL HOMES NEEDED

LAB MIX
F.  Older dog, about 10.  Yellow.  Not purebred, but close.  This is a
wonderful girl!  She was found at Lake Merritt.  She has obviously been
someone's beloved pet and has more good years left in her.  She is very
friendly and very beautiful.
Kennel#24     Animal Control#122285   Available 7/30

LAB MIX (yellow)
This dog could really use some help.  He came into the shelter all torn up
from an encounter with some pitbulls, but he is recovering nicely.  In
spite of his discomfort, he is very friendly and alert.
M.  About 3.  I think he may be part Sharpei.  Whatever he is, he is very
sweet, about 50 lbs., smooth yellow coat and very "labby" in appearance
except for his wrinkled forehead and jowly muzzle.  That's where I see
Sharpei.
Kennel#36     Animal Control#122214     Available 7/31

AVAILABLE NOW

MASTIFF MIX (listed as Shep/Retriever)
M.  10 months approx.  Big dog.  Fawn w/black mask.  Very friendly,
handsome boy!
Kennel#25      Animal Control#125225   Available Now

LAB MIX (black)
F.  Solid black.  Has fuzzy, terrier like "beard" about the muzzle.
Possibly part Griffon.  Very nice girl!
Kennel#11     Animal Control#123071    Available Now

LAB/SHEP MIX (gold)
F.  1 year approx.  Red/gold.  Lab-type coat.  Very attractive, friendly
dog.  Spayed.  Great with young kids!
Kennel#31     Animal Control#122305     Available Now.

CHOW MIX
M.  4 months.  Fawn w/black mask.  This dog looks like he has some German
shepherd in him - he looks like a fawn-colored long-haired GSD.  He is
very handsome and friendly.
Kennel#30     Animal Control#122917    Available Now

LAB MIX (2/black)
8 weeks.  "Lab mix" is a guess here.  That is what the puppies look like.
They came in with their mother.  She is a black&tan dog and looks like she
might have some border collie in her.  She is very beautiful and the pups
are darling!
Kennel#28     Animal Control#122276    Available Now

LAB MIX
M.  5 months approx.  Yellow.  Very friendly, outgoing dog.  Not purebred,
but close.
Kennel#26    Animal Control#114811  Available Now

DOBIE/ROTTWEILER MIX
M.  8 months approx.  Very pretty dog.  You can see Rottie and Dobie in
him.  Friendly, outgoing, intelligent. Black&tan.
Kennel#25     Animal Control#122269   Available Now

SHEPHERD MIX
M.  10 weeks.  Real sweet little guy.  Fuzzy sable coat, black mask.
Kennel#1     Animal Control#123128    Available 8/1

HEINZ 57 (listed as "shepX")
F.  12 weeks.  This is a funny little dog.  She is a very pretty
tri-color.  From her markings she looks like she might be part Aussie.
However, he is short and stubby, so who knows what else is in her.  She is
really darling, intelligent and outgoing.
Kennel#1     Animal Control#122279  Available 7/30

PITBULL MIX
F.  4 months.  Very pretty dog.  Slender, narrow head, red and white
markings.  Friendly.
Kennel#5     Animal Control#122210   Available 7/31

HEINZ 57
F.  10 weeks.  This is a very pretty little black&tan dog.  She is listed
as "shep/husky," but I don't see it.  She is smallish, probably will be
about 40 lbs when grown.  She is very sweet, outgoing and talkative.  She
loves attention!
Kennel#1     Animal Control#122307   Available 7/27

NEWFOUNDLAND MIX
M.  3 mos.  This is a beautiful dog.  He is black and white and looks like
a Newfie/border collie mix.  If so, he is not one of the UC dogs; they are
all accounted for.  He's huge!  He still has his puppy teeth and he is
already about 40 lbs.
He is very friendly and affectionate.
Kennel#31     Animal Control#122301   Available 8/1

SHEPHERD MIX
M.  3 mos.  This is a little sable-colored guy.  He is very sweet,
affectionate, intelligent, etc.  Sorry to use the same old adjectives for
the shepherd mixes, but they all apply.  His name is Toby and he will
probably be about 60 lbs when grown.
Kennel#5       Animal Control#122309     Available 8/1

SMALL DOGS

SPANIEL MIX
F.  About 3 years.  Possibly part Brittany.  Wavy coat, light golden
color.  Smallish, about 25 lbs.  Pretty dog, friendly.
Kennel#5     Animal Control#122294     Availalbe 7/31

TERRIER MIX
F.  Approx. 3 years.  Greyish brown.  Coarse coat.  Looks like she is part
Border Terrier.
Kennel#7     Animal Control#122288    Available 7/27

*** MIXED BREEDS

SHEPHERD MIX
M.  2 years approx. Golden w/greyish "saddle" on back. Very attractive,
intelligent, outgoing, friendly.  Medium size, about 40 lbs.
Kennel#34     Animal Control#122101   Available 7/30

SHEPHERD MIX
F.  2 years approx.  Beautiful dog!  Deep golden color, medium size,
short coat, erect ears.  Looks like she may be part cattledog.   Outgoing,
friendly and intelligent.
Kennel#35     Animal Control#122222   Available 8/2

Re: #125225 Mastiff

Looking for a dog, with plenty of energy for a more active life style -
hiking, camping. Yet most of all a companion. Like bigger dogs with
character, and personality yet am dedicated to training for an obedient
dog who will befriend society and have society do likewise. Dog will be a
housedog who will share a home with a retired guide dog who will hopefully
play a big part in setting an example of good house - people behavior.
Am temporarily living in Groveland, CA just outside of Yosemite
(staying active outside) with permanent residence in Palm Springs

Thank God for someone who likes big dogs!  There are always a couple big
guys at the shelter near me.  But, I'm kind of far for you (although so
is
the Oakland Shelter).  I'm in Sonoma County, the shelter is in Santa
Rosa.
Right now, there's a huge guy who looks like a St. Bernard cross, two
beautiful malamute (or malamute mixes) who would be best placed
together,
a Belgian shepherd cross scheduled for death, a Kuvasz, etc. etc.

I also am a volunteer for Golden Retriever rescue, but that sounds like
a
dog smaller than you are looking for.

If you want a scout, let me know.  Happy to help
