~Roses needed for new Arbor

Post by William E. Purnell I » Sun, 15 Sep 1996 04:00:00

Hello,
I have just spent several weeks building an arbor (round top and all!!!)  Look out Bob Villa:)  Anyway,
I don't know much about roses but I have been told that there is a climbing rose without thorns.  I do not
however, know what it is called or where I might locate one.  I have checked at my local nurseries but the
choices are overwhelming and the people neither helpful or knowledgable.

Can someone recommend a rose for me.  I live on the Salisbury, Maryland, USA.  Thanks.

I think the rose you want is "Maggie", a beautiful bright medium cool
pink with large flowers and no thorns..  Be aware, though, that Maggie
seems to like a lot of sun and will not bloom very well the first year
or so in the ground, although it will grow vigorously---I think its
one of the roses that take several years to establish itself before it
starts to bloom very much (and then it wll bloom a lot).  Good luck!

Another thornless is Zehprine Drouhin, a repeat blooming hot pink Bourbon.
If a once blooming rose is OK, then there's Vilchenblau, an odd bluish
purple mauve grey rambler.

Maggie isn't precisely thornless.  In fact she draws *** from me
regularly!  But she is beautiful!

I, too, think you want Zephirine Drouhan.  Available just about anywhere
mail order.
