HELP! Beetles are eating my grape leaves

Post by Jesse Marli » Wed, 12 Jun 2002 01:58:10

I have recently been infested with some type of beetle.  They seem to
really love my grape leaves.  I tried some soapy water, but they seemed
to enjoy it probably saying, "thanks for the bath."  This morning I got
pissed and sprayed them off with a hose, hopefully drowning them.  Is
there a common beetle that likes to eat grape leaves?  I have never seen
these before.  And is there a way to get rid of them?

Sidenote:  They have been having sex on the leaves too.  I am not that
concerned this year since I did not get any grape bunches that survived
this year, but next year I expect more, and don't want these jokers
back.

Thanks for any help.

Japanese beetles eat mine.  Have not been bad last few years.  You can use
Sevin but if you don't like insecticides there are beetle traps baited with
pheronems. If you use traps, don't put near grapes since they will draw
beetles to them.

Sounds like you have a Japanese Beetle infestation. Are they a
greenish/bronzish color, about 1/4" to 3/8" long? The bugs having
orgies on the leaves are a dead giveaway. Go to your nearest Farm &
Garden store and ask for milky spray. You can also buy traps for about
$5 apiece, but you want to place them on the upwind side of the
vineyard. Some people argue traps draw more beetles, but if they die,
who cares? You can also spray with Sevin or Malathion every 7-10 days.

The Japanese beetle loves grape leaves.  They gather on my rose of
sharon and I tap them into a wide-mouthed jar containing 1/2" soapy
water.  After 2-3 weeks the ***s have mated, layed eggs, and are
gone.   I don't think too many predators like to eat these
***-smelling beetles?
