Here in the Maritimes, we root-prune now (fall) and transplant All
Things Woody in the spring. (Spring transplants get all summer to grow
out their roots before freeze-up.) No doubt what works here (zones range
2-6) will apply more or less to souther Ontario. If you MUST move them
in fall, however (i.e. a bulldozer is coming for your shrub/tree), you
might as well go for it and do so ASAP. Water well, mulch deeply, and
hope for a gentle winter. Good luck!
