How do I propagate Leyland Cypress?? Hardwood Cuttings?

Post by Rob Pfefferko » Sat, 03 Feb 1996 04:00:00

Could someone please give me advice on whether I can propagate
Leyland cypress from hardwood/softwood cuttings? Should I use rooting
hormone? Should I place cutting in soil/vermiculite/plastic bags/
other? When should I do it?

Thanks for your advice. I anxiously await your response.

Rob,

Here's some info re: propagating Leyland Cypress -

cuttings 6-12 inches long, anytime of the year
younger plants produce higher rooting percentages
brown wood at base, wound by taking off needles
IBA/talc 3000-8000ppm, or Dip N Grow
stick in 50/50 peat:perlite medium
70-75F bottom heat
polytent or mist for 10-12 weeks

My readings say it's very easy to propagate.

If you need more "how-to" may I suggest The Reference Manual of Woody
Plant Propagation by M. Dirr and C. Heuser, Varsity Press ISBN
0-942375-00-9  about $32.

Good growing!
