Pollinating pepper plants- Am I doing it right?

Post by Zhanata » Sat, 29 May 1999 04:00:00

This morning I noticed my pepper plants has plents of little
flowers on them.  They are inside the screen enclosure, so I
can't depend on the bees to get to them.  I was using a
q-tip to pollinate/pollinize (I get confused).

Hubby says I see the ***is in the pepper patch, watches me
for a few moments and follows with "Are you sure you know
what you are doing?"

Of course I don't.  Was I doing the right thing?  Was he
just jerking my chain?  Should I use something else besides
a q-tip?  Etc?  Etc?

Peppers are self pollinating--however when outside peppers and tomatoes get
shaken by the wind which aids in pollination--rather than trying to pollinate
the way you have been i think just giving the plants or the blossoms a little
shake should suffice.

A small sable paintbrush is better because the pollen grains will be better able
to leave the brush than they are able to leave the mash of the cotton tip.
But yes, you are doing the exact right thing.
