I just planted some arti***seedlings on 1/11.  How winter hardy are they,
should I cover them with a cloche on frosty nites?  I piled the mulch up around
them for protection.  I planted them in my asparagus bed which does quite well.
Any special treatment needed for the artichokes?  usda 8/9 South Central
Texas.

Artichokes should stand frost without protection. You have the same growing
zone as I do 8/9 , and I have been growing them without protection for
years. One year it dropped to 14 degrees with no damage to the plant. If
there are chokes on the plant they may be discolored by the frost though.
The only special treatment they need is cutting back after you pick the
last ***off , the new growth will come up from the base of the plant.

You will need some frost protection. South Central Texas is not exactly
arti***country (they are grown commercially in California's cool summer
coast), but they should get started early enough in the spring to give you some
edible buds.

Artichokes are (at least theoretically) winter-hardy in South Central
Texas. They are marginal in Central to Northern Texas.
