Bird Netting - Source needed

Post by John Bachma » Thu, 28 Mar 1996 04:00:00

I have been using black, plastic bird netting over my raspberries the
past few years.  It works fine for the birds but the Japanese Beetles
get through the large mesh.  I have seen white netting with a finer mesh
but haven't found a source for it yet.  Anyone know where I can get it?

Hi John,
Since you want to keep out Japanese Beetles, which are only 1/2" long, I
think the netting you are refering to is a 'Floating Row Cover'. These
are made from spunbonded polypropylene and are a translucent fabric that
admits sunlight and water but excludes insects. They are carried by
Stokes (sorry I don't know the US address) and most Garden centres.

The only problem here is that the cover also excludes pollinators which
you will need to get raspberries. According to Rodale's 'Natural Insect
Control' the Japanese Beetle is active in late spring and early summer,
right when your raspberries will be flowering and needing the attention
of the bees. For control of Japanese Beetles, they recommend use of
Bacillus popilliae (Milky Spore Disease) which should be available in
garden centres.

Hope this helps

Might want to try Gardener's Supply.  They have some netting with openings
as small as 1/4" x 1/4" and say these green nets will last several
seasons.
