NEED INFO: Planting Hickory, Black Cherry, Red Maple

Post by Mark Stephen » Sun, 23 Jul 1995 04:00:00

Hi all!

I live in Zone 5, just north of Cincinnati, Ohio. My back yard faces
some pretty thick woods and I want to re-populate half my back yard with
the native trees.  The part of the yard to re-forest is on a northward
facing slope. Clay soil near the top of the slope, and a rich loam near
the woods at the bottom of the hill.  There are no utilities near this
hill.

I need info on germinating Hickory nuts, and black cherries.  The
Robins might take care of the cherries for us, since they eat them and
then hunt on the hillside.  Can I just bury the hickory nuts and look for
a tree next year?

I also have 3 Red Maple seedlings from a friend that I am currently
growing in large containers.  Any opinions about Red maples?  Our woods
currently don't have any red maples, although they are native to this
area.  How invasive is the red maple?

Thanks Much!

Mark, you're better off buying young seedlings from a tree nursery. They're
inexpensive if you buy the 'run of the row' seedlings -- less than $1 each,
they'll save several years and a lot of headaches in getting your trees up
and you can choose varieties that will give you what you want.

Places like Bear Creek Nursery sell the seedlings.
