Grape vine doesn't grape...

Post by Mat » Thu, 23 May 1996 04:00:00

Hi, I have a grape vine about 5 or 6 years old.  It grows fine.  At one point
it was 30 feet long or so.  Covered in leaves.  The only problem is no grapes.
My grape  vine lives on Long Island New York.  The soil is not sandy and is
fine for tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.  The year after I planted it I got one
grape.  Since then, nothing.  Just tons of grape leaves.

Are you pruning your grape vine yearly?  If you arent, that is the
answer.  The extension can tell you how to prune the vines.  I dont
grow grapes, so I cannot make good recommendations on pruning...

Did you try pruning the vine? Are you getting any flowers?

My guess is that you didn't prune it correctly.Grapes generally fruit on
the first 2 or 3 buds of last year's wood so you usually prune to 2 bud
spurs. However there are some varieties like sultana which fruit further
along the canes. To be on the safe side prune some spurs and some
canes.Remember last year's wood !!!!  Good luck  Jim

Alternatively, if you're overpruning you won't get grapes. But definitely
check with your extension agent or get a book on pruning from the library.
It's not hard, honest, but it does take some knowledge and it's a lot
clearer with pictures.
