Regrowing Carrots

Post by ZARABETH JACKSO » Sat, 01 Dec 2001 14:27:59

Hello,

I am not sure if this is the right place to post this but I was wondering if it is possible to re-plant a carrot that still has its top?  Can it been done either in soil or in water?  We are trying to conduct a third grade science experiment and were in need of some assistance.

Thanks in advance

Greg

This is a classic kids' project from a generation or more ago. Maybe
younger people aren't familiar with it. You can probably find lots of
descriptions if you search the Web.

As I recall, the carrot top will grow more greens if put in water, but
it won't regrow the root. There are lots of other plants that will
grow new roots in various ways.

I'd say that instead of fixating on carrots you should do some
research yourself, decide what you want the kids to learn, and choose
a plant that will demonstrate it.

Yes: Soil is best if you wish to keep it going for a period of time. It will
of, course, run up a seed head as opposed to growing more "carrot" but great
for a science project.

Well, the problem is that my wife's class read a story in which the main
character replants carrots and now they are trying to formulate a science
project that can determine if that is in fact reproducible.

Thanks

You will find everything you could ever want to know about replanting carrots, parsnips, onions etc in any book on saving seeds.
