Another Aloe Vera Question

Post by MThomas3 » Fri, 17 Jul 1998 04:00:00

I have been following the recent postings about Aloe Vera plants.  I have a
question that was not addressed in the postings.  (Unless I missed it.)  I have
an Aloe Vera plant that I got when it was about a foot tall.  Well, now it is
huge and it is bent over.  I can't get it to "stand up" straight anymore. It is
still very healthy though.   Should I cut some of the bottom "leaves" and plant
it deeper in the soil? I recently repotted it and I wonder if the pot is too
big.  Could that be the problem?  If so, should I repot it into a smaller pot?

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions for this problem.  I am quite
attached to this plant and I would hate to lose it!

Thank you!
Michelle Thomas

Michelle,

I have had aloe for a long time, but I guess because we use it a lot,
I've never had a plant over a foot tall.  Must be beautiful!  If the new
pot is too big for the existing root system, try to get it into a
smaller pot or prop it up if you can until the roots spread out. An aloe
bending over doesn't sound good in the long run to me.

There are many different species of aloes which grow many different ways, some
are clumping, some erect, and others spreading.  An immature specimen offers
litle indication of how the *** will grow, and if yours is healthy the change
in shape is probably OK.

Another Aloe Vera Question

I've run into this with monster Aloe plants, too. I've tried your idea
with success, when I could find a pot deep and wide enough to bury all
of the "stem". When I notice a plant is beginning to lean, I stake it.

My favorite aloe grew to be four feet tall -- in a huge pot. I'd take it
outside in the summer, and the last year I had it it grew so big and
heavy that I couldn't carry it back in! It was okay, because I didn't
have anywhere to put it anyway...
