Brown spots/Sticky leaves on houseplants

Post by Phil Bud » Sun, 21 Jan 1990 16:53:31

There is some malady attacking my houseplants.  On Spiders Plants and
Swedish Ivy it appears as scaly brown spots and on Purple Passion as a
sticky film on the leaves.

Any clues what might it be or how to get rid of it?

My guess from your description is that it's Oyster Shell
Scale, a parasite that literally sucks the fluids from plants.
The only remedy I know of is to dab on rubbing *** with
a cotton swab.  This is very time-consuming and tedious, I
know.  I've only had the patience to do it with plants that
I value and want to save.  My tendency would be to start new
spider plants from any non-infested "babies" and ditch the others.
The passion flower, IMHO, would be worth the work.  Some plants
don't survive the *** treatment if the infestation is severe
because the *** is *** them.  When you apply it, you must be
careful to just dab it on the scale itself, but if there are a lot of
scales, the poor plant becomes covered with it.  You might also call a
greenhouse and ask if a system insecticide would work -- that's a powder
that is mixed in with the soil in the pot, is absorbed slowly
through the root system and eventually kills whatever is
eating the plant or its fluids without harming the plant
itself.  This takes awhile to work, though.

The brown spots sound like spider mites.  Do they leave a reddish residue
on your thumb when you rub them?

I don't know about the Purple Passion.

Try taking leaves of all three to the local (good) nursery.

If you are going to take your diseased leaves or plants
"to your local (good) nursery," do them a favor and put them
in a plastic bag--sealed.  Your local nursery has enough
problems fighting off disease without having it walk in off the
street.  :-)
