Is there any significant differece between a Plant UV light and a
regular UV light.

I have a small assortment of houseplants that are suffering because of
the lack of light my appartment revieces and I am trying to remedy that
problem but don't wish to waste a bunch of money.

please help feed my plants light.

Organic Gardening said if you have a double tube flourescent light holder,
to use one cool white and one warm white light.  this will cover the whole
spectrum.

how about one incandescent and one of those special flourescent bulbs that
will fit in a regular light socket? and does anyone know if that will cause
the remaining incandescent bulb to go out more frequently?(damn power
fluctuations).

Several years ago, a dear friend of mine was a commercial African Violet
grower and she used regular soft white bulbs.  These were hung in pairs,
about 6 - 8 inches above the plants.  She had what is known as a "ba***t
greenhouse" and would put the lights on timers to burn about 18 hours a
day.  Of course you can adjust this to your situation.  Also, she used the
wicking method of watering and fertilizing also.  Was extremely well known
in the African Violet Circles.  Hope this helps.  Irene1946

Although I'm not an experienced gardener or house plant person, I had a lot of success with African Violets a
number of years ago.  I hung a flourescent light above the shelf of plants, watered from the trays only, and
fertilized occassionally.  The plants stayed beautiful for many years.  I finally gave them away when I had to
move one time too many, and several of them didn't fare as well in their new homes.

> spectrum.Chlorophyll has two absorption maxima - one red at around 700 nm

and one blue around 440 nm, which means that much of the energy
radiated by full-spectrum flourescent light tubes is wasted.
These tubes are intended for human eyes, which have a maximum
sensitivity around 550 nm, which is yellow light. Special lights
are available from fluorescent light suppliers. Osram has a type
called L-77 which I have tried, costs about the same as ordinary
fluorescent lights. In the States, I think Osram may be known
as Silvana, but I am not sure.
Hope this helps.

Your plants want a suntan or something?
They really don't need UV light. Absorption spectra for most plants
is in the red and blue ranges.
