sycamore tree not doing well?

Post by Brigg2 » Tue, 18 Jun 2002 13:19:09

Last spring the tree leafed out fine then in early summer......alot....most of
the leaves died and fell off.  The tree is about 30 ft. tall and had been doing
fine since I moved into this house many years ago.  I thought the problem was
from when I had a natural gas leak near it and the gas company had to dig right
by the roots and did alot of root damadge.  Then I noticed when the leaves
first started dying and falling off all of the other trees in my neighborhood
of the same type had the same problem.  Now to the next spring........the tree
is hardly leafing at all.  Same for all of the others in neighborhood.  Any
ideas........or has anyone esle with a sycamore tree having this problem?  I
live in the midwest ......ILL.
Thanks........Dan.

If these are city sycamores, count your blessings. Whoever let the monster
in my side yard live and grow there should be boiled in oil.

Sounds like anthracnose.  It's worse in years when conditions are moist as
the trees are leafing out.  I'm not expert on the subject, but as I
understand it, it's rarely fatal in an established tree, just unsightly.  A
web search would probably get you more information, or your local extension
agent could advise on what's recommended in your area.
