does anyone know whether artichokes are winterhardy or not? i live near
vienna, austria, our winters can get quite cold, i don't know what zone
we would be here. we protected it this winter (though we hardly had a
winter!) but i think it should be able to do without it.

If your winter minimum temperature is in the range of 20 to 30 degrees
Fahrenheit
and you mulched the roots they should be alright.

Arti***is generally winter hardy to US Zone 8 (minimum temperature 10
degrees F or above) and likes cool summer weather, too, which confines
most US commercial production to the central California coast. Otherwise
you can try protection, or grow as an annual.

We grow artichokes in Colorado as annuals. We are zone 4/5 and it gets pretty
cold here. If the winter is mild and the plant's roots well-mulched, they may
make it through the winter. Otherwise, here is a link to information on growing
