This isn't a good place for someone to give a referral for where to get
a red rat?   ???  I'd really like one for a pet, myself.

I'd like to know where to get red rats too.  It's a good question.

In that case, if anyone knows where you can get a red rat, e-mail these
people and maybe we can try to educate people into not feeding rats to other
animals!!!!!

All I was saying was that people here like rats as pets and may not give
them an answer 'cos they don't like the idea of feeder rats.

You're quite right, Sue. Why would anyone on this group help people find
rats so that they can watch their snakes eat something different. I thought
that the guy was a troll and I just thought that he wasn't worth answering.
I can't believe that people are taking this attitude to what you said.

I'll probably be sorry I asked this but I'm just curious, what do you think
snake owners should feed their pets?  I've heard references to this subject
before, but never heard the whole thing.

I agree, no I wouldn't want to see any rat eaten alive.  Or anything else if
there was any other way.  Thanks for clearing that up, the way it sounded to
me was that snakes shouldn't be fed rodents at all.
I wouldn't think many people would do such a thing as to feed live animals
if they could help it.  Do zoos do that?

Well for one thing, pet shops sell frozen mice for snakes. In the UK, at
least, it is illegal to feed live rodents to snakes but some snake owners
love to watch their pet stalk and kill a small animal. Great fun for them
and the snakes, I'm sure. Not very nice, if you are a rat, though. Most
people her care about rats and wouldn't want one to be eaten alive by a
snake - or am I wrong?

I'm wondering the same thing too, JanetLee.  I have a friend who has a
snake, and he says that if he could feed them carrots, he would.  They
just won't eat vegetables, though.  :(

<<In the UK, at

Actually it isn't illegal, according to the RSPCA -- "It is allowed as
long as they are killed humanely" -- I mean come on! How stupid!

How is that stupid?
I know when my boyfriend had snakes (they were rescues) he would buy frozen
food from suppliers he trusted were humane, but when this was impossible he
would humanely kill mice or rats himself. It's not stupid, Selena, it's a
fact of life.
Would you rather private individuals humanely killing mice, or pet shops
slaughtering them? When that is my choice, I know what I would do.

Toyah

It is stupid -- how does a petowner know how that person is going to
kill that rat "hummanely" -- think about it, no-one is going to see how
that person kills the rat.
