Rat-cage fillers

Post by Kat » Thu, 27 Apr 2000 04:00:00

Hi.
I'm looking for stuff to put in my rats' cage for them to play
with. At the moment there is only the basic stuff, no toys or anything
to climb on, and I want to make it more interesting for them. I have a
second level made out of a cat litter tray and they like to sleep up
there, but if there is something better I can take it out. Has anyone
got any ideas?

I want things that can be attached to the top and sides (it is a
barred cage not a glass tank) or propped against them. Some rat cages
I've seen have had things made out of rope or branches in them. If I
took out the cat litter tray it would just be a large, empty cage with
no extra levels (It is a parrot cage).

Does anybody have any ideas? Or maybe help on where to find
things for rats? I have a PetSmart near me, and a smaller local pet
shop, so I should be able to find pretty much anything general. And they
are two nearly-*** males, if that makes any difference.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Kat

One thing to start off if you have the room is get a wheel, nost rats
are inclined to run on the wheel, this is a good form of excercise to.
Petsmart has some toys like balls, etc for rodents, but it takes a pretty
distinctive personality of a rat to play with the toys. Look for some wood
or wicker type housings or landscape accessories, these are good so they
would be inclined to chew on it, which also helps with keeping their teeth
worn down so they do not grow to long

Just make sure anything you put in there is not poisonous to them or may
make them sick if they chew on it

Hey,  I like the ideas.  I'm going to try a few of them myself.  The tree
branches and jean tunnel sound great.  My rats all have a wheel and boy do
they use it.  I have about 90 rats at this time if you count the babies.  So
you can imagine it is tough keeping them all happy and enjoying themselves.
I give them boxes and they really love them.  Every few days I take out the
old boxes and put in new boxes.
I also have ropes hung all around and across the various cages.  Some use
them and some don't.

Hi

Try going to the pet shop and look at the bird acessories.  Try to get
anything made out of wood or metal (not plastic) like ladders, perches etc.

They also have the rope tuggy things, which can attached to the top of the
cage.

We also have a ferret tube, which is attached to one side of our tank.

If you do decide to get a wheel, try to get a "Wodent Wheel", we have an
ordinaty wheel ourselves (as we can't get Wodent Wheels over in England),
but when we go over to America this year, watch out pet stores!!!!!!!!!
