Is it soft and kind of pliant, or hard and unyielding?  If the former,
then it is probably a mammary tumor (which is what it looks like),
which any competant vet should be able to remove no problem. They grow
fast.  Get her in as soon as possible.  And take her to a vet who
knows rats.  I took Sarah to the first vet, and was told the cost for
removal would _start_ at $500 and go up from there, with little chance
of survival.  I found a real vet afterwards (when the tumor had grown
so huge it almost weighed more than the rat and she could barely get
around), and it was removed and I was charged less than $100.  Poor
Sarah...

That looks like a mammary tumor. There's good news, though. These tumors
are often easily removed by a vet. Get her in ASAP. The sooner you get her
in, the easier it will be for the vet to remove the tumor.

She's only 7 months, so she still has a long life to live. She just needs
your help on this one. Don't waste any time - call vets in your area and
find one familiar with small animals.

Best of luck you and your rat (what's her name?)

Let us know how it goes. Also - what's your rat's name? Just nice to put a
name to a face (she's so cute!)

I agree with Matt - it looks like a mammary tumour. Get her to a vet
and talk over the options.
7 months is very young for a rat to get one, most commonly they appear
when the rats seasons stop at around 18 months. If she is otherwise
healthy, I would talk about the possibility of having her spayed at
the same time as the lump removal. This should help prevent more
tumours reocurring - if it is a benign mammary lump.
Although a spay is more invasive surgery, she should be able to cope
ok if she is young and healthy. Surgery is only a risk if the rat has
respiratory problems.

Heh - great name! Here's hoping your vet can take care of this without much
difficulty. Seven months is still so young!

If nothing can be done, give her some tequila during her last day, she'll
die happy

Bonne chance.

Heh - but seriously, Tequilla's problem is easily fixed at a vet, and for
not that much expense. There's no reason she shouldn't pull through and
have a long life ahead of her.

That said, when our Snickers was near her end, I'd give her the occasional
bit of butterscotch schnapps. I would have never done it, except we all
knew she was nearing the end. Basically, Snickers got anything Snickers
wanted there in the last month or two.

Her last meal was a bit of cookie. Knowing that makes me glad.
