nest box filler?

i am trying to raise about 15 rabbits in lima peru and cannot find any
good hay easily here... they are all about to have babies and i am
wondering if there is another suitable haylike replacement to fill
their nestboxes with?

they are 3kg california (all white) and new zealand (white with brown
spots on nose and ears and tail) varieties, also how much should i be
feeding them each day?  i currently feed them each 150 grams of fresh
vegetables in the morning and 100 grams of pellets in evening.  i have
no hay to feed them.

Do you have grass? You could go out and cut some. Also, get some apple- and
willowbranches. This will provide good fiber. Feed them 30 milligram of
pellets per kilogram of their own weight. Plus fresh veggies.

For nest material, provide the rabbit with cut up newspaper, wool, cotton,
towels etcetera. Also give her a cardboardbox with a hole in it, she'll use
it as a nestbox because she needs privacy.
She will fabricate a nest with it and line it with her own wool, which she
takes from her own body. Do not disturb the nests and give the mother plenty
of fresh water all the time; she'll be thirsty when feeding the babies.
Good luck!

Hi there,

Its good that you have come to this group to get advise etc but I am a
little concerned that you have 15 pregnant rabbits ????  What on earth
are you doing with that many when you don't have a source for their
their basic food?  Do you give them fresh grass at least?  Maybe I am
cranky this morning... but alarm bells are going off in my head.

I'm not sure if you're asking about hay as a feed for the ***s, as
feed for newborn, or as nesting material.

Rabbits are really adaptable as far as food goes.  Mine will eat fresh
and dried apple tree leaves, twigs, bark, bamboo, honeysuckle.  I
would not worry too much if you cannot get hay as long as they have
another good source of fiber.

Hay is important to most pet owners to prevent diseases from living in
a house or a cage.  Limited types of feed and lack of exercise often
result in stomach problems.  Hay helps to counter some of the problems
of a man made diet and couch potato living..

for hay substitutes or high fiber veges for rabbits.

You can simply use straw for bedding...is that what you meant?

Shredded paper would be ok - you must change it regularly as it won't keep
them warm when it is wet. I would avoid towels that have fine loops in them.
The babies can get their nails caught in them and injure themselves.

While the mother's are nursing, make sure they get lots of pellets for
protein. Use fresh grass instead of hay, just make sure there are no
pesticides on it.

the local markets sell fresh vegetables and pellets for only .30 cents
per kilo... safe to say they are eating well enough, it is only the
hay they lack... but they seem perfectly healthy without it.  i am
more concerned about what to use for their bedding...
